Americans Revolt
Yesterday was a beautiful day in the neighborhood. Like a cantankerous bear roused early from a fitful winter’s slumber, Americans roared at their hearing-impaired Senators. They jammed the Capitol switchboards with phone calls, swamped office fax machines with messages, and flooded staffers’ computers with e-mails to aid their visually-impaired legislators. They wanted the attention of their elected officials and they wanted to give them a message. They had been turned on, tuned in, and whipped up to follow orders from their talk radio and the Internet blogusphere commanders.
Like fingernails scraping a chalkboard or a warning alert signal shrieking over loudspeakers, Americans became a collective cacophony of fuming fussbudgets. Their outcry over the amnesty bill proved insufferable to some of America’s soft-spoken, sensitive, munificent lawgivers, who had worked their manicured fingers near the quick, adding and subtracting amendments, moving in and out of backrooms making and breaking deals, singing Spanish serenades to Hispanic disc jockeys and promising the moon. And what did this bastion of brilliance and conniving synergy produce? Zip … zilch … nada. George and Harry, John and Lindsey, and Trent and Teddy’s bill stammered, whimpered, and collapsed on the Senate floor as the plea for Tommy faded and Geraldo’s one last plucked heartstring snapped back to smart his bony fingers.
The senate’s limousine leftists and elitists had lost their control. Their mainstream media cohorts were powerless. Nothing they could think, do, or say could vary the momentum that had been building for weeks. Yesterday, Americans screamed out their windows, “We’re as mad as hell and we’re not going to take it anymore.” Blindsided and bewildered, the befuddled limousine leftists and elitists staggered from the chamber; they had heard the roar and, for the first time in their careers, were afraid.
